Why Your Design Prints Blurry (DPI and Canvas Size)

A café near me ordered 500 A5 flyers for an autumn menu launch. They looked perfect on the laptop. The box arrived and every one of them was soft — the headline had furry edges, the little coffee icon looked like it had been photocopied twice, and the phone number was the kind of blurry you notice before you finish reading it. £180, straight in the recycling.

Nothing was wrong with the design. The design prints blurry because of one number that nobody checked before hitting send: how many pixels were in it. Screens are forgiving and paper is not, and the gap between the two is where most first print runs die.

Here's the number, the maths behind it, and the three things that actually cause it — including the one that no amount of AI upscaling will save.

The one number behind every blurry print: DPI

DPI (dots per inch, near enough interchangeable with PPI here) isn't a setting you turn on. It's the result of a division:

pixels ÷ inches = DPI

That's it. A 1080-pixel-wide image printed 3 inches wide is 360 DPI and looks crisp. The same file printed 12 inches wide is 90 DPI and looks like a bad fax. The file never changed — only how far you stretched it.

Screens sit somewhere around 72–110 pixels per inch, which is why everything looks fine on your laptop. Commercial printing wants roughly 300 DPI for anything a person holds in their hand.

Now the café's flyer. A5 is 5.8 × 8.3 inches. At 300 DPI that needs:

Their file was 1080 × 1350 — a standard Instagram portrait canvas, because that's what they'd made the last thing in. Run the division backwards: 1080 ÷ 5.8 = 186 DPI. Not catastrophic, not sharp. Exactly the level of soft that looks fine on a phone and cheap on paper.

Start at the right canvas size

This is the whole fix, and it has to happen before you design, not after. Pick the finished physical size, multiply by 300, and start there:

Print those numbers out and stick them somewhere. Ninety percent of blurry-print problems are just someone designing a poster on a canvas meant for a social post.

Three things actually make prints blurry

1. The canvas was too small from the start. The one above. It's also the only one you can't fix afterwards — enlarging a finished 1080px design to 2480px doesn't create detail, it just makes the existing softness bigger. Start over at the right size. Annoying, but it's twenty minutes versus another £180.

2. One imported image is too small. This one's sneaky, because the design itself is fine. Someone right-clicks their own logo off their website — where it's 200 pixels wide because that's all a website needs — and stretches it across a third of a poster. Everything else is sharp; the logo looks melted. Check every placed image individually, at its printed size, not the design as a whole.

3. It was exported at 1×. You did everything right and then downloaded the small version. If your canvas is screen-sized and the tool offers a 2× or 4× export, that multiplication is real pixels and it rescues you. If the canvas was already print-sized, export at 1× and you're fine.

Upscaling does not put the detail back

Worth being blunt about this, because AI upscalers are everywhere now and they're genuinely good at one job and genuinely bad at another.

On a photo, an upscaler invents plausible texture and the eye accepts it. Skin, foliage, fabric, a blurred café interior — fine. Use it.

On anything with edges — a logo, an icon, text baked into an image, a QR code — it invents plausible detail that is wrong. Letterforms go wobbly, straight lines wander, and a QR code can stop scanning entirely. There's no fixing a 200px logo by asking a model to imagine what it used to be.

The fix that always works for edges is to not use pixels at all. Vector artwork — logos, icons, QR codes, geometric shapes — has no resolution. It's a set of instructions, so it's as sharp at 3 inches as at 3 feet. If your printer asks for "vector artwork" for your logo, this is why, and it's worth chasing down the original file rather than working around it.

The exception: big things viewed from far away

300 DPI is for things in your hand. It is absurd for a banner.

DPI requirements scale with viewing distance, because your eye can't resolve detail at range. Rough guide:

That last band matters more than people expect. A 4 × 3 ft tarpaulin at 300 DPI would be 14,400 × 10,800 pixels — a file that will choke your laptop and that the printer never asked for. The two-second check before you send it

Zoom to 100% and look at the smallest text on the design. Not the headline — the phone number, the address, the terms line.

Text is where softness shows first, because letterforms are nothing but edges. If the small text is crisp at 100%, the print will be crisp. If it's fuzzy on your screen at 100%, it will be fuzzier on paper. This one check catches nearly everything.

Before you send it to the printer

A short list, in order:

  1. Canvas is the physical size × 300 (or × 150 for wall posters, × 100 for banners).
  2. Every placed image checked at its printed size, individually.
  3. Logos, icons and QR codes are vector wherever you can get them.
  4. Smallest text inspected at 100% zoom.
  5. Exported at the biggest scale available.

None of that is design skill. It's arithmetic you do once, at the start, and then never think about again — which is the best kind of rule.
