Recolour any design to your brand in one click

Brand recolour takes the colours a design uses and swaps each for the nearest colour in your palette — nearest in a perceptual colour space with lightness weighted double, so a dark navy becomes your dark, a bright orange becomes your accent, and contrast survives. Whites, blacks and greys only move to a brand neutral of similar lightness, so body copy never turns gold or white-on-white.
It is deterministic, not generative: the same design and the same palette always give the same result, in a fraction of a second, and it is one undo step. It works on backgrounds and gradient stops, shape fills and strokes, text colours and every text effect, icon fills, inline vector artwork and the colour slots of components.
How to do it
Open the Brand panel with the design open
Click Brand in the left rail. The panel shows the active brand’s colours; you can edit them here first — recolour uses the colours as they are in the panel, saved or not.
Choose the scope
With nothing selected on the canvas, the button reads “Recolour the design to these colours”. Select one or more elements first (⇧-click for several) and it becomes “Recolour the selection to these colours”, leaving everything else, including the background, untouched.
Check the count and click
The caption under the button says how many distinct colours would change; when it says “Nothing to recolour” the design is already on palette. Click the button. Changed elements flash.
Adjust and undo
Not what you wanted? ⌘Z undoes it. Add or reorder colours in the panel and run it again — a palette with one dark, one light and one accent gives the most predictable mapping.
Tips
- Recolour a recreated or template design first, then refine: the AI then works from your colours.
- Keep at least one dark and one light colour in the palette; if the palette has no neutral, greys stay as they are by design.
- Selection scope is ideal for a badge, an icon set or one page in a multi-page design.
- Photos are never recoloured; use Adjust in the photo tools for tint and saturation.
Frequently asked questions
- Why did my black text stay black?
- Neutrals only move to a brand neutral of similar lightness. Your palette has no near-black, so black copy is left alone rather than turned into the nearest bright colour, which would be unreadable.
- Does it recolour icons and vector artwork?
- Yes. Icon fills and every hex colour inside inline vector artwork are mapped, and so are the colour slots of components such as price badges.
- Can I recolour just one page?
- Select the elements on that page and use the selection scope. Page backgrounds are only recoloured in whole-design mode.
- Is this the same as Illustrator’s Generative Recolor?
- It solves the same job without a model: a deterministic mapping with a lightness rule, so results are instant and repeatable, and there is no risk of the AI redrawing your artwork.
